The Cathedral Choir
The Cathedral is served by a traditional choir of boys and men whose prime responsibility is to maintain a pattern of regular choral services from week to week. The choristers range from in age eight to thirteen. They come to the Cathedral for practices and services six days a week during school term time and over the religious festivals of Christmas and Easter. There are also Lay Clerks and Choral Scholars who sing at all of the choral services where the full choir is needed. In addition there are several voluntary singers who complete the team.
The Girls’ Choir
The Cathedral Girls' Choir sings Evensong on Tuesdays during term time. It is made up of girls aged between 11 and 18, and is directed by the Assistant Organist. They join with the Men of the Cathedral Choir for some Sunday services and at a number of special services in the church's year including Ash Wednesday, Mothering Sunday, and the Christmas Midnight Eucharist. The Cathedral Choir and Girls' Choir sing together at the Advent Procession, on Easter Morning and for Choral Foundation concerts. For photos from our recent tour to Chartres, please click here.
The Voluntary Choir
The Voluntary choir provides the music at many of the services during the year when the Cathedral Choir is on holiday and gives an annual performance of Bach’s St Mark Passion. Please see the Easter Services section of the website for details. Members of the choir also take part in the Association of Cathedral Voluntary Choirs Festival, held yearly around the country.
We are always grateful to those from within the diocese and further afield who bring music to our services when the Cathedral Choir are otherwise engaged. We also welcome visiting choirs to sing a whole week (each weekday except Wednesday) of choral services during choir holidays in addition to Sunday services. Sometimes we also have a vacancy for a visiting choir on a Saturday during term time. The current list of vacant dates is available here.
Joining the Choirs
Voice trials for boy choristers take place each January and May; girls are seen by appointment throughout the year. Recruitment of choral scholars takes place in November each year.
We welcome enquiries about any of our choirs at any time - please direct these to the Music and Liturgy Assistant on 01245 294481 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
