Peter Holmes of BBC Essex visited Chelmsford Cathedral recently to interview the Dean, Nicholas Henshall and Chair of Works Committee Pamela Yates. And if anyone had assumed that the interview would take place in the Cathedral grounds, Peter Holmes had other ideas.
Under the watchful eye of site foreman Terry of Bakers of Danbury, they climbed the 100 ft tower via a series of ladders to emerge onto the patform surrounding the spire.
It was a once in a 60 year opportunity to view close up the restoration work that is taking place. Whilst from the ground the tower will look much the same, once the scaffolding comes down later in the year, the attention to detail to ensure that the work is carried out using traditional methods will ensure it remains true to the original building. More details are on the Cathedral website.
