Six life-sized sculptures by Iranian artist Saloomeh Asgary, have been installed at Chelmsford Cathedral. The exhibition, which has come directly from Norwich Cathedral, includes pieces called Jonah in the fish, Motherhood, Christ is born, Salvation, Repentance and Maturing and is in place throughout the Cathedral, including the chapels.
Saloomeh was apprenticed as a carpenter after she graduated from University in Tehran, and learned to use power tools; something which is unusual for women in Iran. She then set up her own workshop where most of the Salvation Sculptures were produced.
Each piece has an explanation with it and this free exhibition is open every day until 20 February.
The installation team set up the statues.
