Chelmsford Cathedral
Anglican Methodist Covenant

The National Covenant between the Anglican Church and the Methodist Church was signed in 2006 and it was decided to recognise this with a local covenant between Trinity Methodist Church, the Church of the Ascension in Maltese Road and the Cathedral.  The local Covenant was signed at Evensong in June 2006 and a steering group has met once each term since then to co-ordinate joint events, services, pulpit exchanges and Lent Groups.  The Methodist Rite has been celebrated in the Cathedral, for some time as an annual event and for a time the Revd Viv Gasteen presided at a Friday morning Eucharist here.  The clergy from the three churches have met regularly either for Morning Prayer or Evening Prayer.

In 2011 a special Evensong was held in the Cathedral with the choirs of Trinity, Ascension and the Voluntary Choir to celebrate five years of the Covenant and then in 2016 to celebrate ten years.  This service was at Trinity Methodist Church on Sunday 5th June.

The steering group continue to meet and are looking at ways to increase the joint activities between the churches. The annual barbecue (in 2018 to be a fish and chip supper for a change) is for the pastoral visitors’ teams from the three churches and is at Trinity this year. It serves both as a thank you to the teams and an opportunity to socialise with our neighbours from the Covenant Group churches.
