Our story

English for Women is an exciting and vibrant project that makes a real difference to women in our communities who encounter language barriers in their everyday lives.

It was started in 2015 by Heike Prentice with just three Afghani families, and has now grown to support women from over 30 nationalities.

Chelmsford Cathedral continues to encourage English for Women, but in January 2018 English for Women was adopted by the Chelmsford Diocese Mothers’ Union who now support the project and are helping it to grow further.

Our sessions

English for Women’s aim is to provide a friendly and welcoming environment for women who speak little or no English, where they can improve their communication skills, make friends, learn about British culture, integrate into their local communities and feel less isolated.

We run free language drop-in sessions on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings during term-time which give women the opportunity to gain/improve their English language skills through conversational learning.

English for Women provides a safe and welcoming environment for all women regardless of language, culture, religion or nationality.

Would you like to learn English, meet people and make friends?

Would you like to improve your English and/or build your confidence?

Would you like to learn more about British culture and living in the UK?

Yes?  Then come and join us!

English for Women runs topic-led English classes at 10am each Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays (until 12pm) during term-time.  We talk about a different topic each session so you don’t need to come along every day but can fit the sessions around your work or family commitments.

We also have a volunteer-led play area where your pre-school children can play while you learn.

Please do come and join us.  You will find a warm welcome and lots to talk about!  For more information, please email Susannah:

English for Women runs women-only sessions.  If you are male and are looking for English/community classes, please do get in touch and we will be happy to try to sign-post you to an alternative opportunity.

Are you female, friendly and patient?

Are you enthusiastic about supporting others and have an interest in conversational learning?

Do you work well in a team and in small groups?

If so, we would love to hear from you!

Teaching experience is not required, all we ask is that you are an excellent English speaker, have a clear/neutral accent, an enthusiasm and patience to work with women of all backgrounds and are able to offer one morning a week (Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday) during term-time.

Please contact Susannah for more information:

If you are male and would like to volunteer with English for Women, please do also get in touch.  We are currently looking at volunteer opportunities outside the women-only sessions.

The group meets at
