Congratulations to Bishop Stephen Cottrell on his appointment as the new Archbishop of York

The Right Reverend Stephen Cottrell, Bishop of Chelmsford, has been nominated by Her Majesty the Queen as the new Archbishop of York in succession to the Most Reverend and Right Honourable Dr John Sentamu.

No date has yet been announced for the appointment but along with the whole Diocese, the Cathedral community sends their congratulations to Bishop Stephen and his wife Rebecca.

The Dean writes: It was announced today that Bishop Stephen is to be the next Archbishop of York. This is a hugely significant appointment in the life of the national church and indeed the wider Anglican Communion. As the Bishop's Cathedral we have the special job of praying for the Bishop, and for the great challenges and opportunities ahead both for him and here in the Diocese of Chelmsford.

+Stephen's great gifts as an evangelist and teacher; his power as a preacher, broadcaster and writer; and above all his ability to articulate God's love and mercy  beyond the boundaries of the church are wonderful things he will bring to this new and extraordinary role.

Please pray for +Stephen and Rebecca, and for those here who have already begun the process towards the appointment of the next Bishop of Chelmsford.

Full details on the announcement including a letter from Bishop Stephen can be found on the Diocese of Chelmsford website or by clicking here.
